FL Lead Poisoning Stats (Source: FL CLPPP 2005)

PAL (Partnership Against Lead) Project
  • Florida has an estimated 433,000 homes built before 1950 that likely contain lead-based paint.

  • The number of reported cases of lead poisoning has fluctuated since 2001, with an overall drop in the number of reported cases from 669 in 2001 to 392 in 2005.

  • This state-wide rate of new cases of lead poisoning among children screened in Florida has decreased 72 percent over this five-year period.

  • The screening rate has increased from just 66,457 in 2001 to 135,982 in 2005.

  • The rate of reported new cases of childhood lead poisoning in children less than 72 months of age per 1,000 children screened has declined from 7.8 (2001) to 2.2 (2005)

  • The state-wide rate of reported new cases per 1,000 children screened has declined steadily since 2001 from a rate of over 7.8 per 1,000 children less than 72 months of age to 2.2 per 1,000 in 2005.

  • In 2005 there were 304 new cases of lead poisoning reported in Florida.

  • For Miami-Dade, 90% of the 175 individuals with elevated blood lead levels in 2005 were either Hispanic or non-Hispanic black.
